This class is in-person at Artichoke Music (in SE Portland). Limited to 13 Students. Classroom is located upstairs(front classroom)

This class meets on Sundays for 6 weeks. The dates for this class are May 4, 18, 25, June 1, 8, and 15th. The time is 10-11am. (please note: no class on May 11(Mother’s Day)

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Get ready to jam! This is class is for the intermediate players wanting to learn and focus more on improvisation and soloing in the gypsy jazz style of Django Reinhardt and other players in the manouche tradition.

Taught by Tracy Kim, who has been teaching and playing this style for over 25 years!

Guitar will be the focus and used to for demonstrations. However, All Instruments are welcome to join in! PDFs with TABS will be emailed to students and will be used for Guitar. Standard notation is included for all other instruments.

This session focus on learning to improvise over many of the songs taught in Intro to Gypsy Jazz(Minor Swing, Sweet Georgia Brown, Djangoloy, Bossa Dorado, Dark Eyes. Students will learn improvisation strategies using Tracy’s etudes as demonstrations of licks and soloing concepts. Select Django licks and techniques will also be highlighted.

This class will be prepare you for jamming at local Django and Gypsy Jazz jams immediately! Students will be jamming at the beginning and end of each class. Yes, Tracy will discuss “how to jam”, etiquette, etc. It will be fun and “jam” packed with licks and soloing concepts.

These songs have been hand selected by Tracy especially for the beginner/intermediate players to demonstrate the various key concepts for improvisation in the Manouche style of Django Reinhardt and contemporary players.

Tracy Kim has taught music professionally for the last 25+ years in the Portland area. He can be seen performing in the area many nights a week often with different ensembles from folk to rock to country to jazz. Many of his students have gone on to be professional musicians and instructors.

Private lessons in person or via Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom with Tracy are generally on guitar, ukulele, piano, or music coaching, in general.
