This class is in-person at Artichoke Music (in SE Portland). Limited to 13 Students. Classroom is located upstairs(front classroom)
This class meets on Sundays for 6 weeks. The dates for this class are May 4, 18, 25, June 1, 8, and 15th. The time is 11am-12pm. (please note: no class on May 11(Mother’s Day)
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This is class is for the intermediate players wanting to learn the jazz classic repertoire(including songs by Miles Davis from his classic Kind of Blue album, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington Dave Brubeck and more!) and focus more on learning easy improvisation methods.
Guitar will be the focus and used to for demonstrations. However, All Instruments are welcome to join in! PDFs with TABS will be emailed to students and will be used for Guitar. Standard notation is included for all other instruments.
Each week, a song will be taught, students will learn the melody, chords, comping, and soloing strategies. Students will be introduced to Pentatonic & Blues Scales, Modes, Arpeggio and ii-V Licks for application to improvisation. All worksheets will be provided by Tracy.

This workshop/jam is taught by jazz guitarist, Tracy Kim. He has been performing and teaching jazz for over 30 years.
This class is intended for intermediate instrumentalists who would like to learn jazz classics and beginning jazz improvisation concepts. Songs will be chosen from the following classic jazz list:

The focus will be on chords, comping, improvisation and soloing methods, application and creativity. Students will learn melodies, licks, improvisation ideas, rhythmic phrasing, chord shapes and comping ideas for rhythm instruments and analysis of the tunes and concepts. Tracy will be sharing many of his etudes and some select worksheets for improvisation.
These songs have been hand selected by Tracy especially for the beginner/intermediate players to demonstrate the various key concepts for students wanting to play jazz and beginning improvisation.
Please Note: You can do a $50 drop-in rate per session.

Tracy Kim has taught music professionally for the last 25+ years in the Portland area. He can be seen performing in the area many nights a week often with different ensembles from folk to rock to country to jazz. Many of his students have gone on to be professional musicians and instructors.
Private lessons in person or via Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom with Tracy are generally on guitar, ukulele, piano, or music coaching, in general. For any serious student wanting expert instruction tailored to fit the needs of each individual student. Tracy will help outline the steps necessary to reach your musical goals and dreams.
